Fever Ray - “If I Had A Heart” from Fever Ray
If you saw Breaking Bad this past weekend, then you will instantly recognize this slow, badass dirge as the backing track over Jesse’s brutal Go-Kart-to-Fucked-Up-Meth-House sequence. I assumed it was the work of some sludge metal band, but I was surprised to find out it was the work of a female Swedish electronic artist who uses pitch shifters to make her voice sound epic in a number of ways. Thus I was finally introduced to Fever Ray, the solo effort of Karin Dreijer Andersson who is famous for being part of the acclaimed electronic brother-sister duo The Knife and having a voice that at times is reminiscent of Bjork and at other times is a wholly unrecognizable musical force. In an age where dubstep and house are dominating the pop charts and club scenes, The Knife and Fever Ray keep the artistic and innovative aspects of electronica strong, as their tracks are both catchy, atmospheric, trippy and unorthodox. The best part is that they have no problem writing either light, poppy tracks that are bustling with energy or dark, ambient pieces that are rich in melancholy. I’m glad the show has introduced me to these two groups, as I haven’t been enthralled with an electronic album like I currently am with Silent Shout and Fever Ray since I got into Kid A by Radiohead years ago.
